Selling Your Caravan for Export: How Does It Work?

The Netherlands has one of the highest numbers of caravan owners per capita in Europe, resulting in a large market of touring caravans, fixed caravans and folding caravans available for sale. Many of these caravans end up with foreign buyers who appreciate the typically well-maintained condition of Dutch touring equipment. Countries like Germany, Belgium, Poland and the Scandinavian nations are frequent destinations for exported Dutch caravans.

At Auto Export Document in Hengelo, we handle the export process for caravans of all types and sizes. We are officially recognized by the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) and prepare the export document on the spot. As the seller, you receive the proof of discharge, which releases you from all future liability related to the caravan.

After RDW deregistration, the Dutch number plates are invalid. A caravan towed abroad on public roads needs its own export plates and mandatory export insurance with a green card. The towing vehicle's insurance does not cover this. The €50 export document alone is sufficient only when the caravan is carried on a trailer, low-loader or car transporter, off its own wheels.

Find a Buyer

You have found a foreign buyer for your caravan. Caravans are often sold through specialized platforms, camping forums or directly to dealers abroad.

Contact Us

Schedule an appointment or visit us during office hours; please call or WhatsApp us about 20 minutes before you arrive. We are available Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 16:30.

Bring the Documents

Hand in the license plates, registration codes and vehicle registration card. The foreign buyer provides a valid ID document.

You receive the proof of discharge and the buyer gets the export document. After deregistration, the buyer may tow the caravan abroad once its own export plates and mandatory export insurance are in place.

Proof of Discharge: Why It Matters for Caravan Sellers

Even though caravans are towed vehicles, they are still registered with the RDW and carry their own license plates. This means that as the registered owner, you are responsible for road tax and any obligations associated with the caravan. The proof of discharge officially ends this responsibility and protects you from future claims.

Caravan Export Plates Always Come with Export Insurance

A caravan towed on public roads to another country needs its own temporary export plates after deregistration, because its Dutch plates are no longer valid. Export plates are only issued together with export insurance and a green card; plates without insurance are not available. This also applies to caravans and trailers. Insurance for the towing vehicle does not cover the caravan for this journey.

Export plates and mandatory insurance cost €120 for 14 days, or €170 including the export document. Only if the caravan is carried on a trailer, low-loader or car transporter, without travelling on its own wheels, is the €50 export document sufficient.

No MOT (APK) Required for Caravan Export

A valid MOT inspection (APK) is not required to export your caravan. The technical condition and inspection status of the caravan are irrelevant for the export document. You can export old caravans, damaged caravans or caravans that have never passed an inspection. The only requirement is that the caravan is registered with the RDW and has valid license plates.
