Selling Your Trailer for Export: How Does It Work?

Trailers are among the most versatile registered vehicles in the Netherlands. From luggage trailers and flatbed trailers to enclosed box trailers, boat trailers and horse trailers, there is a wide variety of trailer types that are registered with the RDW and carry license plates. When selling any of these trailers to a foreign buyer, the export process must be handled through an RDW-recognized company to ensure proper deregistration and seller protection.

At Auto Export Document in Hengelo, we handle the export documentation for all types of trailers. We are officially recognized by the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) and prepare the export document on the spot. As the seller, you receive the proof of discharge, which officially releases you from all responsibility for the trailer.

After RDW deregistration, the Dutch number plates are invalid. A trailer towed abroad on public roads needs its own export plates and mandatory export insurance with a green card. The towing vehicle's insurance does not cover this. The €50 export document alone is sufficient only if the trailer is carried on another trailer, low-loader or car transporter, off its own wheels.

The documents needed for trailer export are similar to other vehicle types. Since trailers do not have a mileage reading, this is not required. Bring the following documents to our office for a quick and smooth process.

We handle the trailer export paperwork in one visit and arrange its own export plates and mandatory insurance if it will be towed abroad.

Agree on the Sale

You have found a foreign buyer for your trailer. This may be through online marketplaces, trade contacts or direct sales at a business location.

Visit Our Office

Schedule an appointment or visit us during office hours; please call or WhatsApp us about 20 minutes before you arrive. Bring the license plates and registration documents with you.

Submit Documents

Hand in the license plates, registration codes and vehicle registration card. The foreign buyer presents a valid ID document.

Export Finalized

You receive the proof of discharge and the buyer gets the export document. After deregistration, the buyer may tow the trailer abroad once its own export plates and mandatory export insurance are in place.

Proof of Discharge: Important Even for Trailers

Many trailer owners underestimate the importance of a proper proof of discharge when selling their trailer for export. Even though trailers are towed vehicles, they are independently registered with the RDW and have their own license plates. As the registered owner, you are liable for road tax and any associated obligations. Without a proof of discharge, you could continue receiving road tax demands and be held responsible for a trailer that has already been exported.

At Auto Export Document, the proof of discharge is included as a standard part of every trailer export. After the export document is prepared, your road tax obligations for the trailer are immediately terminated and you are fully released from any future liability.

Trailer Export Plates Always Come with Export Insurance

Once a trailer is deregistered, its Dutch plates are invalid. If it is then towed abroad on public roads, it needs its own temporary export plates and mandatory export insurance with a green card. The towing vehicle's insurance does not cover this. Export plates are only issued together with export insurance and a green card; this applies equally to caravans and trailers.

The plates and insurance cost €120 for 14 days, or €170 including the export document. Only when the trailer is carried on another trailer, low-loader or car transporter, without travelling on its own wheels, is the €50 export document sufficient.

No MOT (APK) Required for Trailer Export

A valid MOT inspection (APK) is not necessary to export your trailer. Whether your trailer is brand new, well-used, damaged or has never undergone an inspection, we can prepare the export document. The only requirement is that the trailer is registered with the RDW and has valid license plates. Many trailers, particularly lighter ones, are not even subject to periodic inspection requirements in the Netherlands.
