What you get
How to export a car to Ukraine step by step
Exporting a car to Ukraine from the Netherlands follows a clear sequence, and getting the order right avoids delays at the Ukrainian border. First, visit our RDW-recognized office in Hengelo with the vehicle registration document (part I and II) and your passport. We deregister the vehicle from the Dutch RDW register and issue the official export certificate (exportdocument) for €50. This deregistration generates the RDW export code and your vrijwaring, releasing you from further Dutch road tax and liability.
Next, we arrange the 14-day export insurance with the Green Card for €100 and fit the white export license plates so the car can legally travel across the EU toward Ukraine. Because Ukraine is not an EU member, you should also carry an EX-A customs declaration; we explain how the export is logged at the EU exit point. For a single visit, most drivers choose the complete package (€150), which combines the certificate, insurance and plates in one appointment ready the same day.
Once you cross into Ukraine at a checkpoint such as Medyka–Shehyni, present the Dutch export certificate to Ukrainian customs as proof the vehicle has left the Netherlands legally. From there, Ukrainian registration and import taxes fall under local rules.
Costs and insurance when you export a car to Ukraine
The Dutch side of the cost to export a car to Ukraine is fixed and transparent. The RDW export certificate alone is €50 and is enough if you already have your own transport or a trailer. If you plan to drive the car to Ukraine on its own wheels, you need the 14-day export insurance for €100, which includes the Green Card that is valid in Ukraine and the white export plates. The complete package at €150 bundles everything, which is what most Ukraine-bound drivers choose given the long distance.
Because the drive from Hengelo to the Ukrainian border is roughly 1,800–2,200 km, the standard 14-day insurance window is usually enough, but delays at busy crossings can eat into it. If you need more time, the export insurance can be extended for €120 per additional 14 days. We recommend arranging any extension before the expiry date rather than risking an uninsured leg of the journey.
Keep in mind these prices cover only the Dutch export procedure. Ukrainian import duties, excise and VAT are set by the Ukrainian customs service (Derzhavna mytna sluzhba) and depend on the car's age, engine size and fuel type. Budget for those separately before you travel.
Route and border crossings to export a car to Ukraine
Planning the logistics is a big part of a smooth car export to Ukraine. From our office at Slachthuisweg 135 in Hengelo, the most direct route runs east on the German A1/A2 motorways toward Berlin, then across Poland on the A2 toward Warsaw before turning south-east toward the border. The whole trip is around 20–25 hours of driving, so plan overnight stops and keep all your Dutch export documents together in the car.
The busiest crossings are Medyka–Shehyni and Korczowa–Krakovets near Przemyśl, while Dorohusk–Yahodyn near Chełm is a good alternative when the southern posts are congested. Routes via Slovakia or Hungary are also possible if you are travelling toward western Ukrainian cities. Whichever crossing you choose, the EU exit is where your export is confirmed, so carry the exportdocument and, for a non-EU destination like Ukraine, the EX-A customs paperwork.
On the white export plates you are covered for third-party liability throughout the EU thanks to the Green Card, right up to the Ukrainian border and into Ukraine itself. Check the current waiting times at your chosen crossing before departure, as these can vary significantly by day and season.
