Export Insurance and Plates for Trailers
Dutch export license plates and export insurance for your trailer, whether below 750 kg (no Dutch plate) or above 750 kg with a Dutch registration. RDW recognised, based in Hengelo, from €120. For trailers over 750 kg we also prepare the RDW export document (€50 extra).
Export Plates and Export Insurance for Your Trailer
When you move a trailer from the Netherlands to another country, stricter rules apply than for domestic transport. Your regular Dutch car policy covers trailers under 750 kg only within the Netherlands, and that coverage expires the moment you cross the border. That is why an export license plate and dedicated export insurance are essential. At Auto Export Document in Hengelo we arrange both for every trailer type, from light luggage trailers to heavy car transporters and horse boxes.
Our office is officially RDW recognised and has specialised in export documents and export insurance since 2016. We serve private owners, dealers and transport companies moving trailers to Germany, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Spain, Portugal and every other European destination. All documents and plates are valid for 14 days across the European Economic Area, plenty of time to deliver the trailer to its final address.
Dutch law splits trailers into two categories that decide which documents you need: trailers under 750 kg and trailers over 750 kg. The sections below explain exactly what applies to each category, what it costs and which steps to follow. Not sure of the weight? Check the trailer's type plate or contact us for tailored advice.
Exporting a Trailer Under 750 kg (No Dutch Plate)
Trailers with a gross vehicle weight below 750 kg do not have a Dutch registration of their own and are not listed in the RDW register. In daily use they ride under the plate of the towing car or van. As soon as you export the trailer permanently, however, most European countries demand a dedicated registration for the trailer regardless of weight.
For that reason we supply a temporary Dutch export plate with export insurance for light trailers. The plate identifies the trailer during transport and the first days after arrival, and the insurance provides third-party liability cover for 14 days across the European Economic Area. Because the trailer was never registered in the RDW system, no RDW export document is required.

Exporting a Trailer Above 750 kg (Dutch Plate Present)
Trailers with a gross vehicle weight above 750 kg carry a Dutch registration and a vehicle title (kentekenbewijs). Exporting such a trailer requires additional steps because the trailer has to be removed from the RDW register before it can be registered abroad.
On top of the export license plates and export insurance for €120, you therefore also need an RDW export document that costs €50. This document officially deregisters the trailer from the Dutch register and generates the proof of discharge for the seller. Without it, the trailer cannot be registered in the destination country and you remain liable in the Netherlands for fines and road tax.
