Why export a car from the Netherlands to Cyprus in 2026?
Cyprus attracts a steady stream of European emigrants and winter residents who bring their own car, camper or caravan. The local market is small and the dry climate keeps vehicles in good shape, so a well-documented Dutch used car is in demand.
As an EU member, Cyprus levies no import duties, and a used car bought from a private seller carries no additional VAT. The buyer registers the vehicle with the Road Transport Department, pays a registration fee and an annual road tax, which for newer models is based on CO2 emissions. Note that Cyprus drives on the left; a left-hand-drive Dutch car can still be registered and driven without problems.
You cannot drive to Cyprus: nearly everyone books RoRo shipping from Rotterdam or Antwerp to Limassol, which takes roughly two to three weeks. If the car is driven to the departure port, it needs export plates and insurance; on a trailer, the €50 export document alone is enough.
