Why export a car from the Netherlands to Malta in 2026?
Malta has a compact, dense car market with strong demand for small and economical cars: narrow streets, scarce parking and short distances. Dutch used cars with verifiable history do well, including among Europeans relocating to the island.
As an EU member, Malta levies no import duties. It does charge a registration tax, calculated by Transport Malta from the registration value, CO2 emissions and vehicle length, plus an annual circulation licence. Malta drives on the left, but a left-hand-drive Dutch car can be registered without problems. Check the tax amount in advance via Transport Malta's official valuation system.
The car reaches Malta by RoRo shipping from Rotterdam or Antwerp, or by driving to southern Italy (±2,000 km) and taking the ferry from Sicily to Valletta. For that drive we supply the 14-day export insurance with white plates; on a trailer, the €50 export document alone is enough.
