Bought a car at a car auction in the Netherlands: what now?
The Netherlands is one of the largest auction markets in Europe for used vehicles. Ex-lease cars with a full service history, young used cars from company fleets, commercial vans and damaged vehicles change hands online every day. Buyers from across Europe and beyond bid along, because the supply is large and the vehicle history is excellently documented thanks to the RDW registration and periodic inspection.
After the sale the practical part begins. The auction gives you a collection period of usually a few working days. But you cannot simply take a purchased auction car abroad on its own registration: the vehicle must be deregistered for export at the RDW, you need an export document and for the drive itself valid license plates and insurance.

We officially deregister the vehicle from the Dutch registration system for export. You receive the proof straight away.
Auto export documents
The official RDW export document, and for destinations outside the EU also the EX-A export document for customs.
Insurance and plates
14 days of export insurance with green card plus 2 white export license plates. Drive away straight from the auction.
Everything happens at our office in Hengelo, a stone's throw from the A1 and A35. Coming from Germany or further away? Most customers combine collecting the documents with the drive to the auction location. Check our export services in advance so you do not forget anything.
What exactly are white export license plates?
White export plates are temporary Dutch license plates that the RDW links to a vehicle deregistered for export. They belong to the temporary export registration that is valid for 14 days: exactly enough to drive the car legally from the auction to its final destination. Without these plates you drive uninsured and unauthorised, with the risk of fines and impoundment.
The plates come with the green card: the international insurance certificate of the export insurance. With it the liability is covered throughout the EU and in many countries beyond. Police and customs instantly recognise the combination of white plates, export document and green card as a legal export drive.
Please note: the export code on the registration certificate alone is not enough to drive. Only with plates and insurance is the drive legal. See our RDW information for the details.

Drive it yourself or arrange transport?
Drive it yourself with export license plates
The cheapest and fastest route for roadworthy vehicles. For 200 euro you have plates, insurance and documents, and you set your own pace. A drive to Poland, Romania or the Balkans is easily achievable within the 14 days of cover, including stopovers.
Requirements: the vehicle is roadworthy, you have a valid driving licence and the vehicle is deregistered with an export document. We arrange that last part.
Transport by trailer or car ambulance
For non-driving damaged cars, lots without a valid inspection or larger numbers at once, transport is the way to go. Even then the RDW deregistration and the export document remain mandatory, and for non-EU destinations the EX-A customs document.
We make sure the paperwork is correct so the transport does not stall at the border and customs. Feel free to ask us for advice on the best approach for your lot.
