Exporting your car from the Netherlands to Spain

Drive to Spain with export plates
Drive with your white export plates via Belgium and France to Spain. Routes via the A7/E15 coastal route or via Bordeaux to Irun are both doable in one day.
ITV inspection in Spain
Your vehicle undergoes technical inspection at an ITV station (similar to MOT). Our partner schedules the appointment and guides you. After approval you receive the ficha tecnica.
Pay registration tax
The registration tax (IEDMT - Special Tax on Certain Means of Transport) is calculated based on vehicle CO2 emissions and value. Our partner handles the filing.
Register with DGT
The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) registers your vehicle in the Spanish vehicle register after all documents are approved.
Receive Spanish license plates
After successful registration you receive Spanish license plates. Your car is now fully registered in Spain and you can get Spanish car insurance.
Delays in the import process? No worries.
The import process in Spain can sometimes take longer than 2 weeks. Delays at the DGT, waiting times at ITV stations, or missing documents can extend the timeline. During this period you still need to drive legally in Spain.
For this reason we offer the option to extend the export insurance for an additional 2 weeks. This allows you to continue driving legally in Spain with your export plates while you wait for Spanish registration and license plates.

What does it cost to import a car in Spain?
The complete Spanish import guidance through our Dutch-speaking partner starts from EUR 800. This includes the ITV inspection appointment, DGT registration, all administrative work and collection of your Spanish license plates. The full import process typically takes 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the province and ITV station availability.
Please note: Vehicles without European type approval or without a CoC require an individual homologation (homologacion individual). This can significantly increase the cost and extends the timeline by 2 to 4 weeks.
