What Is Vehicle Export Insurance?
Vehicle export insurance is a temporary liability insurance specifically intended for vehicles that are being exported from the Netherlands to another country. When a vehicle is deregistered from the RDW, the regular insurance and Dutch license plate become void. To still be allowed to drive the vehicle to its destination country, export insurance is legally required.

When taking out the export insurance, you automatically receive export license plates and a green card (international proof of insurance). The entire process takes a maximum of 15 minutes at our RDW-recognized office.
The export insurance is standard valid for 2 weeks from the moment it is taken out. Need more time to get the vehicle to its final destination? Then an extension of 2 additional weeks is possible. This way, you always have sufficient time to safely and legally drive your vehicle abroad.

The green card (officially: International Motor Insurance Card) is the internationally recognized proof that your vehicle is insured for use on public roads. This document is essential when exporting a vehicle from the Netherlands and is accepted in all European countries as valid proof of insurance.
When taking out vehicle export insurance at Auto Export Document, you receive the green card automatically. You do not need to arrange anything extra or pay separately for it. The green card is linked to the export insurance and has the same validity period of 2 weeks. When extending the insurance, the green card is also extended.
The green card contains all relevant information about the vehicle, the policyholder and the insurance company. During a traffic check or in the event of damage abroad, you present the green card as proof of insurance. Without a green card, you risk fines and cannot legally use the vehicle on public roads.

Export License Plates: Temporary Plates for Export
Export license plates are temporary license plates that you receive when taking out vehicle export insurance. When the vehicle is deregistered from the RDW, the original Dutch license plates must be surrendered. The export license plates are mounted on the vehicle in their place, so you can legally drive on public roads.
The export license plates are linked to the export insurance and have the same validity period of 2 weeks. After this period, the plates may no longer be used on public roads. The vehicle should then be registered in the destination country, or the insurance should be extended.

Extension of the Export Insurance
The standard validity of vehicle export insurance is 2 weeks. In some cases, this period is not sufficient to get the vehicle to its final destination and have it registered. Think of export to countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Norway or Sweden, where the travel time or registration process may take longer.
At Auto Export Document, you can extend the export insurance by 2 additional weeks for €120. The extension can be arranged both on location and remotely. It is important to request the extension in time, preferably before the current insurance expires. After the insurance has expired, the vehicle may no longer be used on public roads.
