Selling Your Trailer for Export: How Does It Work?
Trailers are among the most versatile registered vehicles in the Netherlands. From luggage trailers and flatbed trailers to enclosed box trailers, boat trailers and horse trailers, there is a wide variety of trailer types that are registered with the RDW and carry license plates. When selling any of these trailers to a foreign buyer, the export process must be handled through an RDW-recognized company to ensure proper deregistration and seller protection.
At Auto Export Document in Hengelo, we handle the export documentation for all types of trailers. We are officially recognized by the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) and prepare the export document on the spot. As the seller, you receive the proof of discharge, which officially releases you from all responsibility for the trailer.
Like caravans, trailers are towed behind another vehicle, which means separate export insurance is typically not required. The towing vehicle's insurance covers the trailer during transport. This makes trailer export one of the simplest and most cost-effective export transactions, requiring only the export document at €50.

Required Documents for Trailer Export
The documents needed for trailer export are similar to other vehicle types. Since trailers do not have a mileage reading, this is not required. Bring the following documents to our office for a quick and smooth process.
From the seller (NL)
- Dutch license plates
- Registration codes
- Vehicle registration card (transfer certificate)
Good to know: Trailers are towed behind another vehicle and do not require separate export insurance or export license plates. The towing vehicle's insurance covers the trailer during transport. In most cases, only the export document (€50) is needed. Contact us with any questions.

Proof of Discharge: Important Even for Trailers
Many trailer owners underestimate the importance of a proper proof of discharge when selling their trailer for export. Even though trailers are towed vehicles, they are independently registered with the RDW and have their own license plates. As the registered owner, you are liable for road tax and any associated obligations. Without a proof of discharge, you could continue receiving road tax demands and be held responsible for a trailer that has already been exported.
At Auto Export Document, the proof of discharge is included as a standard part of every trailer export. After the export document is prepared, your road tax obligations for the trailer are immediately terminated and you are fully released from any future liability.
What the proof of discharge covers
- Road tax for the trailer stopped
- No future liability for the trailer
- Official proof of deregistration
- Trailer insurance discontinued
What the buyer receives
- Official RDW export document
- Register the trailer abroad
- Tow the trailer home immediately
- No separate insurance required
Why Trailers Do Not Need Separate Export Insurance
Trailers cannot move independently on public roads. They are always towed behind a motor vehicle such as a car, van or truck. Because of this, the towing vehicle's liability insurance covers any incidents involving the trailer during transport. This means there is no need for separate export insurance or export license plates for the trailer itself.
This is a significant advantage for trailer exporters, as it reduces the total export cost to just €50 for the export document. The buyer simply hooks up the trailer to their towing vehicle and drives it to the destination country. The towing vehicle must, of course, have its own valid insurance and registration.
