Sell Your Caravan for Export, Simple & Affordable
Selling your caravan to a foreign buyer? At Auto Export Document in Hengelo, we prepare the RDW export document and your proof of discharge. Caravans usually only need the export document, from €50.
Selling Your Caravan for Export: How Does It Work?
The Netherlands has one of the highest numbers of caravan owners per capita in Europe, resulting in a large market of touring caravans, fixed caravans and folding caravans available for sale. Many of these caravans end up with foreign buyers who appreciate the typically well-maintained condition of Dutch touring equipment. Countries like Germany, Belgium, Poland and the Scandinavian nations are frequent destinations for exported Dutch caravans.
At Auto Export Document in Hengelo, we handle the export process for caravans of all types and sizes. We are officially recognized by the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) and prepare the export document on the spot. As the seller, you receive the proof of discharge, which releases you from all future liability related to the caravan.
An important advantage of caravan export is that separate export insurance is usually not required. Since a caravan is towed behind another vehicle, it is covered under the towing vehicle's insurance policy. This means you typically only need the export document at €50, making caravan export one of the most straightforward and affordable export transactions we handle.

Required Documents for Caravan Export
To export your caravan, you need to bring the following documents to our office. Note that caravans do not have a mileage reading, so this item is not required. Ensure both the seller and buyer have their documents prepared.
From the seller (NL)
- Dutch license plates
- Registration codes
- Vehicle registration card (transfer certificate)
Good to know: Caravans are towed vehicles and usually do not require separate export insurance or export license plates. The towing vehicle's insurance covers the caravan during transport. This means only the export document (€50) is typically needed. Contact us if you have questions about your specific situation.
Step by Step: Sell Your Caravan for Export
Exporting a caravan is one of the most straightforward export processes. Since separate insurance is usually not required, the transaction is quick and affordable. Here is how it works at Auto Export Document.

You have found a foreign buyer for your caravan. Caravans are often sold through specialized platforms, camping forums or directly to dealers abroad.

Schedule an appointment or walk in during office hours. We are available Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 16:30.
Bring the Documents
Hand in the license plates, registration codes and vehicle registration card. The foreign buyer provides a valid ID document.
Done in 15 Minutes
You receive the proof of discharge, the buyer gets the export document. The caravan is deregistered from the RDW. The buyer can tow the caravan home immediately.
Proof of Discharge: Why It Matters for Caravan Sellers
Even though caravans are towed vehicles, they are still registered with the RDW and carry their own license plates. This means that as the registered owner, you are responsible for road tax and any obligations associated with the caravan. The proof of discharge officially ends this responsibility and protects you from future claims.
Without proper export documentation and a proof of discharge, you could continue to receive road tax demands for a caravan that is already in another country. At Auto Export Document, the proof of discharge is issued automatically as part of the export process, ensuring you are fully protected from the moment the caravan leaves our office.
Seller protection
- No more road tax obligations
- Released from all future liability
- Official proof of ownership transfer
- Caravan insurance discontinued
What the buyer receives
- Official RDW export document
- Register the caravan abroad
- Tow to destination immediately
- No separate insurance needed
Why Caravans Usually Do Not Need Separate Export Insurance
Unlike cars, motorcycles and campers, caravans are towed behind another vehicle. This fundamental difference means that the caravan is covered by the towing vehicle's liability insurance during transport. There is no need for the caravan itself to have export insurance or export license plates, because it does not travel independently on the road.
This makes exporting a caravan significantly more straightforward and affordable. In most cases, you only need the export document at €50. The buyer simply hitches the caravan to their towing vehicle and drives it home. The towing vehicle must of course have valid insurance and registration.
Caravan export at a glance
What you need
- RDW export document (€50)
- License plates and registration documents
- Buyer's valid ID
What you do NOT need
- Separate export insurance for the caravan
- Export license plates for the caravan
- Valid MOT (APK) inspection
No MOT (APK) Required for Caravan Export
A valid MOT inspection (APK) is not required to export your caravan. The technical condition and inspection status of the caravan are irrelevant for the export document. You can export old caravans, damaged caravans or caravans that have never passed an inspection. The only requirement is that the caravan is registered with the RDW and has valid license plates.
