What the RDW export certificate proves and why you need it
The RDW export certificate is more than a receipt - it is the legal record that your vehicle has been removed from the Dutch vehicle register (kentekenregister) and released for permanent export. When we process the export at our RDW-recognized office in Hengelo, the RDW immediately assigns an export code and issues your vrijwaringsbewijs (proof of discharge). From that moment you are no longer liable for Dutch motor vehicle tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting), APK obligations or any parking or traffic penalties on that plate.
Foreign registration authorities across Europe recognise the Dutch export certificate as official evidence that the car left the Netherlands legally. Without it, you may be unable to register the vehicle abroad, and the Dutch plate would remain active in your name - meaning ongoing tax bills and fines could follow you. This is why the export certificate is mandatory for every car leaving the country for good, whether it goes to an EU state or beyond.
The certificate costs €50 and includes the deregistration itself. For drivers who also need to move the car on its own wheels, we can add 14-day export insurance and white export plates, or supply the complete package for €150 in a single visit.
Getting your RDW export certificate in 15 minutes
The process to obtain an RDW export certificate at our Hengelo office is fast. You are welcome during office hours (Mon-Sat 10:00-16:30); please call or WhatsApp us about 20 minutes before you arrive, so someone is always on hand to prepare your documents and export plates straight away. Outside office hours by appointment. Bring your original registration document part I and II - the kentekencard and the tenaamstellingsbewijs - plus a valid ID such as a passport or driving licence. Companies should also bring a recent Chamber of Commerce (KvK) extract so we can confirm authority to export the vehicle.
We check the documents, verify ownership and process the export directly with the RDW system. Within about 15 minutes you leave with the official export certificate in hand and the deregistration already confirmed in the register. If you only need the document itself, the car does not have to be present; the vehicle is only required when you also want export license plates fitted for transport.
One important note: copies of the registration document are not accepted. If your original has been lost or stolen, contact the RDW on 0900-0739 to request a replacement before you visit us, otherwise we cannot complete the export on the same day.
RDW export certificate for EU and non-EU destinations
The RDW export certificate is required no matter where your car is heading, but the surrounding paperwork differs by destination. For exports within the European Union - say to Germany, Poland or Belgium - the export certificate combined with export insurance and white export plates is usually all you need to drive the car to its new country and register it there. Customs formalities are minimal because the vehicle stays inside the EU customs area.
For destinations outside the EU, such as Ukraine, Turkey, Serbia or Bosnia, you also need an EX-A customs export declaration alongside the RDW export certificate. The EX-A confirms the goods (your vehicle) have cleared EU customs, while the export certificate confirms the Dutch deregistration. Together they satisfy both the EU exit checks and the import authorities at the destination.
